A Bit of Missional Liturgy

NT Wright offered this prayer at the close of his lecture at Holy Trinity Brompton. I’d tell you when he gave the lecture, but their site says he gave it on October 6th, 2009, and while I know he teaches an inaugurated eschatology where the blessings of the future kingdom are received and are to be shared in the present — I just can’t bring myself to believe he is actually PREACHING in the future! (oops — just remembered that Europe uses what we’d call military style dating dd/mm/yy — so while my joke falls flat on the face of my goofiness, at least my mind is set at ease concerning the stability of the space-time continuum — the lecture is from June 10th, 2009!)

Another bit of good news — Brompton hooked him off of his 4-month writing sabbatical! I think Paul and the Justice of God is finally on the way! (We’ll still have The Gospels and the Story of God and The Early Christians and the Purpose of God to wrap up the magisterial Christian Origins and the Question of God series) Book Six looks like something even Stone-Campbell people might be interested in!

Anyway, here’s the prayer — I’ve been chewing on it all day and will probably continue to do so all weekend.

Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth

Set up Your kingdom in our midst

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God

Have mercy on us sinners

Holy Spirit, Breath of the Living God

Renew us and all the world

Pray with me this weekend! I’ll be praying for the mission of God in Detroit (devastating economic peril), in Nigeria (Hidden Treasure Christian Schools, and a kidnapped evangelist), in Frankfort, and here at Fumbling.

in HIS love,

PS – What are YOU praying about this weekend? Please share in a comment, and let my heart be joined with yours before our Father’s throne. “Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.”

  1. My thoughts are still with our brothers in Cuba:

    (1) For Magalys, who still needs a wheelchair.

    (2) For Ammiel, who hit a man who darted in front of his car last week; God is gracious, and the man is recovering.

    (3) For our brothers in Matanzas, who have baptized 178+ so far this year.

    (4) For Christians across the nation who still struggle with economic hardships.
