What is Enlightenment?

In Ephesians 1:18, Paul asks God to fill up the eyes of our heart with light. Light in the form of His hope; light in the form of His glory; light in the form of His power. Why these things? Because without them, we will fail in our spiritual race. Without them we will be overcome by darkness. And without God giving them to us, we will never get them.
They belong to Him! He created us to need them even more than we need food, water, or air. We know we need them, even when we are so lost that we don’t even know what they are, from whence they come, or that they even exist. How do we know? Humans are needy creatures. We’re chock-full of wants, desires, hungers cravings, compulsions, addictions. But there comes a day in the life of every sin addict, a “moment of clarity” or “rock-bottom”, when we realize that we’re still empty! Everything we’ve done for 10, 20, 30, 40 years has been anaesthesia, not satisfaction. Numbness, not fullness.
Christ’s blood will cleanse our souls. But clean and empty is just not enough. So we have a daily, hourly, moment-by-moment choice: do we keep fueling our souls with poison? Or do we really repent and surrender to God, knowing that He will fill us with what we need? Believe me, it will taste funny, like the difference between raw vegetables and candy bars. Clean water and CocaCola. But your taste will change, as God’s grace, God’s will, God’s love, God’s Spirit settles deeper and deeper, squeezing out the filth. Withdrawal will end, I promise. And when it does, you will be exhausted, but you will also be filled with light, truly filled, perhaps for the first time ever. God is faithful, and He will do it! Wait for Him!

in HIS love,
Nick
